Prime Minister puts Cornwall centre stage in first statement to Commons

In his first statement to the Commons as Prime Minister, Andy Burnham put Cornwall centre stage, referencing his recent visit to the nation and his commitment to working on a devolution deal.

He said: “I was glad to meet the Liberal Democrat leader of Cornwall Council with my honourable friend the Member for Truro and Falmouth on my recent visit.

I know like many rural economies across the UK, Cornwall lacks a basic level of infrastructure which in turn harms growth and holds back living standards and life chances, and I heard the cross-party call for a devolution deal.

I understand concerns in this house about the potential emergence of a two-tier England between those with devolved power and those without, and I will not ignore them. So, I have asked No.10 North to begin work with Cornwall council and its 6 MPs on a devolution deal with or without an elected mayor.“

Leader of the Council, Leigh Frost, said the announcement is a real win for Cornwall speaking with one voice. He says: “Cornwall has now formally secured the offer of a devolution deal without being forced to adopt a mayor, something everyone had worked together to achieve.”

Cllr Frost extended his thanks to all of Cornwall’s MPs for standing with the Council.
